"Crystal Silence" and "Fanfare For The Warriors" by the Art Ensemble were the first two jazz records I ever bought. A lot of ground covered under the heading "Jazz" no?
ReplyDeleteI am enjoying you effort with this blog. Thanks.

I once had an ambition to collect all of Gary Burton's recordings. I came close before reaching the point of diminishing return. Crystal Silence remains a favorite and launched a long relationship between Gary and Chick. A lot of reviewers pan this kind of music as "chamber" "lite" or as I remember one put it "as fey and tinkling." They need to listen more carefully. The interplay/conversation between these two virtuosi is miraculous. Imaging playing this stuff line after line, always complementing/responding/provoking/etc.
ReplyDeleteNot to mention the sheer beauty of the title track. Jazz creates moods like no other music, and Crystal Silence puts the keen listener under a spell of intelligent serenity. But does it swing? Who cares?
