  1. What a surprise to see this one. Bobby Jones is pretty obscure, although he played in 2 major bands led by Woody Herman and Charles Mingus. His second (of 2) leader albums for Enja is Hill Country Suite. It's a spare trio date with the fantastic George Mraz on bass and Freddie Waits on drums. There is definitely a hill country vibe to the selection of songs and the gospel-like playing. Kentucky is not known for its crop of jazzmen, but this album is really good, as well as unique. Jones died in 1980 in his early 50s.

If you want to track down his work with Mingus, the album "Pithycanthropus Erectus was recorded in Paris in 1970 for American Records. It's been on CD and contains great versions of Mingus repertoire. The horns are Jones on tenor, Charles McPherson on alto, and Eddie Preston on trumpet. Rhythm mates for Mingus are Jaki Byard and Dannie Richmond. Studio sound is excellent. Look for it!
