Recorded on June 5, 1978
Archie Shepp famously recorded two duo albums with Horace Parlan for SteepleChase: Goin' Home (1977) and Trouble in Mind (1980).
While I'd hate to be without either of those wonderful albums, I like this duo album with Abdullah Ibrahim even more. It's a special collaboration.
I haven't heard this one, but I have 2 SteepleChase duets with Horace Parlan: Going Home and Looking at Bird. I think I would prefer the South African as a duet partner for Shepp but I will check it out. Thanks for the referral.
ReplyDeleteReviewers tend to characterize Shepp's 1960s Impulse albums as "ferocious". They are not. Pharoah Sanders was "ferocious" but Shepp was more thoughtful in his soloing and arranging, not to mention his concepts. Shepp as always something of a romantic traditionalist but skillfully blended his vocabulary with modern avant garde concepts. Worth revisiting for anyone resolved to dismiss the "fire music" of the late 1960s.
