Betty Carter – The Audience with Betty Carter (Bet-Car/Verve, 1980)

Betty Carter (vo); John Hicks (p); Curtis Lundy (b); Kenny Washington (d)

Recorded on December 6 - 8, 1979

Betty Carter's singing is incredibly creative and audacious.  She is one of a kind.  Plus, on these recordings she's supported by a stellar band.

Not surprisingly, the authors of the Penguin Guide to Jazz awarded this set a "crown" -- their highest accolade -- and I fully agree with their assessment!  It's special.

  1. There is no question about the ability of Betty Carter to reach an audience in live performance, as the set here reveals. You can't just kick back and expect to be entertained by Ms. Carter. More likely, she will confront your complacency and provoke emotional responses you may not wish to express. That makes her a powerful messenger. I can only compare her to Nina Simone in this regard. Both are extraordinary artists with messages worth receiving.
