I've always been a bit ambivalent about Enrico Rava, widely regarded as the greatest Italian trumpet player (according to Paulo Fresu, another Italian trumpet player). This pairing with Abercrombie begs for a little more warmth; I don't see too many quartets with trumpet and guitar along with drums and bass. The "ECM sound" was still emerging (this was their 63rd release), so I sense some searching among the musicians for what seems right - slow and dreamy or wild and free. There's a bit of both on this record.
ReplyDeleteMy choice of a Rava record from the 1970s would be "Enrico Rava Quartet" (1978), where Roswell Rudd on trombone provides a great contrast with the leader. The deeper brass fills the void left by trumpet-guitar pairing, and the session is more adventurous (especially for ECM).
Many more ECM albums followed. In my opinion the ones with trombone (most often Gianluca Petrella) are the most satisfying. Beyond the ECMs, there are numerous recordings on Italian and other European labels.
