Jim Hall – Live! (A&M Horizon/Verve, 1975)

Jim Hall (g); Don Thompson (b); Terry Clarke (d)

Recorded in June 1975

I suppose many would point to Concierto (CTI, 1975) as THE Jim Hall record of the 1970s.  Not me.

If I were to choose one record from Hall's entire career -- not just the 1970s -- it would be Live!

The music swings so unbelievably hard.

  1. While I admire Concierto, I have to agree with the choice of the Live album. It's more conventional (less contrived) and uses only the basic trio (guitar, drums, bass). This is an intimate date in a Toronto club. One might quibble about the softness with which Jim Hall plays his electric full body guitar but if you listen carefully you'll be rewarded.

Hall was extremely active as leader (Discogs lists 73 albums as leader) and also accompanied many great artists on memorable albums: Bill Evans, Paul Desmond, Lee Konitz, etc.).
